Lunchtime Speaker-Mike Goddard

December 2, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Mizens Railway
Founded in 1990 on the old Mizens Farm site, now the McLaren Technology Centre, the railway carried 60,000 passengers annually in the 1990s. In 1999, McLaren financed its relocation to make way for factory construction. After exploring various sites, including Brooklands Museum, the railway secured a 10-acre plot next to Knaphill Nursery on Barrs Lane. Volunteers, with some professional help, built the new railway, and interim services operated at Squires Garden Centre. It officially reopened in May 2002, inaugurated by Woking MP Humfrey Malins.
Operations and Membership
Mizens Railway has 125 members, with 35-40 active volunteers serving as drivers, guards, and maintenance crew. Running costs of approximately £70,000 annually are covered by ticket sales, catering, and merchandise. The railway operates regular services from May to December on Sunday afternoons (2-5 PM) and hosts special events, including Santa Specials, New Year’s Day rides, and the Knaphill Village Show.
Features
The railway boasts over 30 engines, including 10-12 steam engines and more than 20 diesels, all owned by members. There are three routes:
• The Suburban: A ¾-mile route taking 7-10 minutes.
• The Miler: A 1-mile route completed in 10-15 minutes.
• The Highlander: Featuring bridges, currently under maintenance.
Mike highlighted the remarkable effort involved in relocating and maintaining the railway, which remains a testament to the dedication of its volunteers.
The talk concluded with Jane Cooper thanking Mike for an insightful presentation about this community-driven treasure.
